Thanks Matt for all the help! I'm not a metallurgist either so I'm reaching out for experience, I don't want the machine shop to just use drill rod off the shelf. I continued to do some looking on the internet as well and 1040 - 1050 seems to be a better choice. There may be a process used in making the parts specified to contractors to get the level of hardness using low carbon steel. I'm going to also see if the shaft can be Nitrided as an option, we have some good shops in the area. Thanks again!
