Thermostat Question

I just purchased a NOS Mopar 180 deg thermostat for my truck, WM300 with 251. It is Mopar part number: 1552902

I also got a rubber gasket for it that I assume should go on the top of the thermostat housing, as shown in pic, as is also what is shown in the parts diagram blowup drawing in the cooling section of truck parts manual.

But how can the rubber washer seal against the thermostat with that hole/check valve in the thermostat housing circled in red?
