An old friend, long gone, who was a mechanic all his life, told me about 40 years ago that if you ever buy an older vehicle that has been run on non-detergent, to continue with non-detergent. His theory was that detergent oil would loosen the sludge and result in greater oil consumption.
If you are not ready to consider a rebuild, you should probably either continue with non-detergent, or follow Clint's method with draining, removing and cleaning the oil pan, and the kerosene flush. But be ready for the possibility of having to rebuild.
