Wikipedia (for whatever it's worth) says this: In 163 countries, vehicles are equipped for the driver to sit on the left side. In 78 countries, vehicles are equipped for the right.
Most of the 78 were formerly under British control.
Since all early vehicles were provided floor shifted manual transmissions, I assumed the driver was directed to sit on the left so as to be able to shift gears with the right hand. Far more people are born right handed than left handed. I wonder if the ratio of left hand/right hand people is the same as the countries?
