Aw, Junior that does make sense. This winter I have had to chain down my 10 wheel dump truck for plowing snow. The truck is surplus State Of Utah or UDOT. I have the contract to keep some Rural Roads open. The roads were layered first with freezing rain then snow...rinse and repeat several times.
I chained both rear axles, out side only. Heavy load in the bed for added traction. Also I had to chain the front right tire so I could make turns.
Long story short. With what I experienced this year, your theory is spot on. If I have to encounter these conditions again I am going to re-chain like they did. I should mention that all the roads are dirt and the temperatures have bee very cold so it was nice to have a hard packed surface but the ground and roads are uneven.
