Thanks all. I learned that if you have discoloration of various shades on the bearing race, it is worn enough to warrant replacement, as the race has formed a "cup" and not true round by a thousandth or two.
I like the idea of a spacer and shims, for as you know shimming is pretty much standard in setting pre loads and "mating" of the gears themselves, so what's one more shim area while you're at it.
until then, looks like I will be investing in the standard double cup bearing as I find them, and put a set on the shelf with all the other "necessary" hard to find/now obsolete rebuilding parts.
