Ok, yes the shaft will slide an inch or so w/o the transmission in, so you'll have to wait until it is installed. Once it is installed you'll be able to determine if you have any issues with the linkage.

- Clutch adjustment is 1 inch travel measured at the top of the pedal.

- After you have adjusted the clutch free travel and before you install the intermediate shaft, place the transmission in 4th gear, push on the pedal to see if you can turn the tranny yoke by hand fairly easy. This will tell you if you have any clutch issues that have to be corrected before going further with the assembly.
