Yes, I use plastigage and shim stock to set the clearance. You place a strep on the cap, place it in place, torque it, remove the cap to determine the thickness of shim stock needed to get you in spec.
Usually .0005, .002. .003 shim stock will get you in proper clearance by cutting a strep and adding it between the bearing and cap. I do this for ground cranks as well.
