yes the manuals say .0005 to .0015 but over the decades of sending cranks out it is rare they come back within that spec. most the time they come back at .00175 to .00280. I am happy when they are under .0002. I dont know why a "rule of thumb" would be better than a factory spec. One machinist pointed out that the machines being used to turn cranks just cant be as precise as the factory set ups were.
Also there is the line bore size which may vary slightly after decades of the engine running
