Windshield Regulator Issue

I'm having a problem with the windshield regulator on my WM300. When the windshield is closed, the strap (the spring steel piece that pushes out the windshield) hits the bar that goes between the firewall and the dashboard. I'm thinking that the little curved tail piece at the bottom of the regulator casting is either bent or worn, and is allowing the strap to drop down more than it should, rather than forward. Has anyone ever noticed this, and found a way to correct it? I dare not bend the little tail piece or the pot metal will surely fail.
