The crankshaft had WD-40 on it originally, from the machine shop. It lasted for quite a while, but eventually dissipated. That's when I put oil on it.
I may try WD-40 for my tools. I wonder about things like table saw tops, though. With WD-40, I'm concerned that any wood that gets sld across the top will be stained by the WD-40. That's why I was thinking about a wax or other coating that won't absorb into the work piece.
