You might have lost a spring under the breaker plate, or the 60 year old springs are weak.
You need a timing light with the knob on the back to read how many degrees it advances, at idle, ummm 700rpm, 1200 rpm, 1800?
Me bing a fpormer Dyno Shop employee, I am familiar with timing curves. I tried variations on my 'seat of the pants dyno', a steep local hill. I ended up at the 60 year old specs. Not much you can do with that head design and a cam with negative overlap.
Specs, centrifugal/mechanical advance at engine rpm:
500-900 0 degrees
900 rpm, 2 degrees
1150 5.5-7.5
Vacuum advance:
6-7" hg 0 deg
10" 3.5-5.5
16" 8.5-10.5
1800 7.5-9.5
