I probably would have never been able to come up with some of the unique details that Durward built into that flatbed. The bottom of the hopper doors on the tool boxes are at about the same level as the top surface of the timbers that sit on top of the trucks frame rails, and these timbers were scribed and shaped with a draw knife to perfectly fit the hump over the rear axle. So, the tool box reaches all the way from driver to passenger side, humped up in the middle over the mentioned timbers. I can slide long parts in over the timbers and lock both doors. The higher center section has a bottom, front, and back also, so no danger of loosing anything. The raised hopper doors along with the raised center section makes a nice well on either side, and as you mentioned, stuff stays in these wells nicely.

I have a lot of log chains, clevises, chain binders, hooks, snatch blocks, etc. stored in the tool box wells along with the tire chains that came with the truck. Two tire chains on each side along with all of the other stuff fills the wells up to the hopper doors. So, I can still easily slide long stuff in above all of it side-to-side.

I recently built full side boards, headboard and tailgate with 1-inch thick hackberry boards that were rough cut on our antique tractor club's circular sawmill. I was able to use up a lot of "stuff" I had collected over the years in making these side boards. I also used all square bolts, lag bolts, and nuts to keep with Durward's design. I tried to build them the way I imagine he would have.

Thanks for the comments.
