I'm starting to break in the 318 in the 6x6, and I'm looking for advice on how to do it properly. Here's what I've done so far:
- Used good quality assembly lube during assembly.
- Filled the engine with 12 qts of 10w-30 detergent oil and a quart of break in additive (don't remember what brand).
- At first startup, ran in the cam at 2000rpm for 25 minutes.
- Changed the oil and filter after 1 hour of intermittent running. Filled with 12 qts of 10w-30 detergent oil and a second quart of break in additive.
I now have about 200 miles on the truck, mostly driving around town and about 50 miles on the highway driving (max intermittent engine speed of 3000rpm). I've been careful the vary the engine speed +/-500rpm when cruising.
I plan to change this engine oil and filter at 500 miles, then at 1000 miles, and again at 3000 miles. Is there anything else I should plan to do or be aware of?
Thanks,
Greg
