Actually 12+ years ago they were clearing brush 100+ feet deep from the sides of the road in Yosemite National Park. That was quite something considering if you broke a branch before then you were almost thrown in jail. I asked a Ranger why the brush cleaning. He said they were trying to prevent fires since they had allowed the brush to build up so thick. He said many changes in attitudes occurred after Yellowstone burned.
