You can set timing to the brand of fuel you are using as long as it doesn't create ping or kick the engine backwards on starts. I run 8 degrees BTDC with no problems. I rotate the engine on number 1 cylinder on the compression stroke and stop at 8 degrees BTDC. I place a portable radio next to the distributor, tune to a static or noise channel, and rotate the distributor until I hear a pop. It's at that point the points have opened and it's timed.
