I have wanted to avoid changing a seal that leaked very slightly on 2 or 3 steering boxes. I would NOT use chassis grease. I HAVE used John Deere Corn Head grease, which is a consistency more like pudding than like peanut butter. CENEX sells a product called EZ Flow Lithium grease, which, as far as I can tell is almost identical to Corn Head grease. The product works in steering boxes, winches, closed knuckles. I used it in a '68 Ford DANA 24 transfer case years ago.
