Interesting explanation, and as I know, it's true. Some realities that conflict with that explanation are: 1. People were basically more honest then, and locking was probably unnecessary most of the time. 2. Anyone not altitudinally challenged would have fun sliding across the seat, over the 2 or 3 shift levers. 3. Traffic was at least a million times less crazy in those days. Apparently the auto manufacturers decided the population needed to be culled out when they started putting locks on both sides. :)
