I put a metal roof on my WC53, I think it will add a little strength to the body. I used 16 gauge mild steel., but I think the original is 18 ga. As you know the roof is not flat, but it will lay down and fit with a little bit of massaging. The opening is not parallel either, it is a bit wider at the back than the front.
I left the original flange around the opening in place because it has a lot of rigidity. I trimmed the roof skin to overlap the opening by about an inch all around and used “Lord Fusor” brand body panel adhesive all around the edges, with sheet metal screws to hold it in place and clamp it down. Later, I plug welded the screw holes up, quenching with a wet hand towel. With careful trimming you could fit a panel just into the opening, but then you will have to weld very carefully on the thin roof panel flange..
