Help! Starter motor

My M37 has been converted to a 12 volt system, I don't know what starer motor has been used to replace the 24 volt SM. My truck spins up and turns over a couple of times then the starter gear releases, I recharged the batt. That didn't seem to help, If it is the bendix gear can I fix it if not which starter motor should I use to replace it? Or, am I barking up the wrong tree?
