question about altinator wire to coil resistor

i have a gm alternator on my truck.. one wire on the back is going to the +on the battery. one wire on the plug is going to ignition switch. the small wire ( exciter wire i think ) on the alternator plug is going to the wire that comes from the ignition switch to the white ballest resistor that is mounted to the bracket on the coil it is wired to. should that go some place else instead of going to that resistor... and what does that resistor do i hope i explained myself correctly..
