One thing I do each year prior to start-up is check the operation of all 'safeties'. Example: Simulate blower motor failure and make sure high limit works....Simulate power failure and confirm gas valve closes tightly. Most all units have redundant controls, but it doesn't hurt to run them through their paces anyway.
