MU-2 Winch Assembly Instructions

I am re-assembling a MU-2 winch with some new parts and gaskets. I see the gaskets are also shims. What am I looking for with the gaskets/shims? Are they to preload the bearings, adjust end-play?

Is there a written procedure for re-assemblying a winch that I can access?
