Nice pictures. You mention your surprise in finding that the cluster gears rub directly on the transmission case. It does seem like some sort of sacrificial piece would be appropriate, but if you think about it, there is no significant thrust load produced by these gears, because they are straight-cut gears, so there is really not much wear at those interfaces. If they were helical gears, there would be a very significant thrust load, and I would think there would be a sacrificial washer, bushing or something to take up that wear.
