The 68RFE is a good transmission overall. However, because the valve body and the plate it mounts to are both aluminum there have been issues with internal leakage at higher pressures (such as those encountered with heavy towing or high performance use) causing erosion on the valve body itself. The fix for this is a steel "separator plate" which goes between the valve body and the aluminum transmission "plate" and allows the tranny to hold higher internal pressure. These are available from various manufacturers and are not terribly costly. Adding this does require the addition of an aftermarket deep pan for clearance which is not a bad thing as it adds fluid capacity and aids in cooling. If you are considering doing something like an EGR/DPF delete and a towing tune this is something you will want to do anyway. Behind a stock engine I would call it cheap insurance, with room to grow a little later if you want to. Others may know more about this subject.
