Kinda what I was thinking but was looking at some old fir or re-planed railroad ties? What about something to isolate the wet wood timbers from the frame? Paint? Rubber?

Any idea as to how much travel I should allow for over the wheels with standard springs? Some old posts from years ago recommended expecting as much as 8" or 9".
