Frame Serial Number

I was able to locate and clean up the very faint frame serial number and happily it matches the data plate. But it is barely visible and will disappear again when I paint the frame. I imagine it's illegal to re-strike or engrave over it and I wouldn't want to get the State involved anyway. Is there an approved way to preserve it?
