I took the cover off, that's how I found the chunk in there and that's how I let the blob out. I think the metal chunk is from the pinion gear. The ring, from the part I can see doesn't seem to be missing teeth. And the chunk I found looks like its pinion shaped.

Along with that chunk, I can feel some little grit in the blob and at the bottom of the casing. I'm letting it drip out for awhile. After a bit, I'll go back under there and see what I can see. Probably pull the differential out as well.

Sigh..
