Would a 2WD truck have a driving front axle?

I always thought a "D" prefix to a Dodge/Ram truck model number indicated a 2 wheel drive truck with a non-powered front axle. Shouldn't these be W-600 and W-700 trucks Alex is talking about? Am I missing something? Are these all after-market conversions? Please explain. Thank you.
