gear lube vs automatic transmission fluid

After owning my truck for over 25 years I find out the 3 speed manual transmission calls for automatic transmission fluid as lubricant. It never had anything but gear lube in it as far as I know .It leaks some as well ,seems transmission fluid would leak a bit more. Anyone know why automatic transmission was used.
