I have always made my own gaskets for the 3rd member. I do not know what thickness they are. I am guessing .020 or so. I can not imagine that .010 would make much difference. But, on the military trucks where three were needed on a special application, that would be .010 times three. A 32nd of an inch may cause some bind.
I would bet though if you were to install an axle shaft without the hub in place, that you would find that it would be free to move around at the hub end by more than .010 inch.
I have never broken an axle shaft. Now that I have said that I am knocking on wood just in case.
