Jim, I did a Google search on differential temperatures a few months ago, because I wanted to see if I needed to select a high-temp paint to hold up to the heat, and came up with several hits. These were not specific to the type of differentials in these trucks, but should be relevant, nonetheless. I believe most of the temperatures were at or just under 200 degrees, with some being more than that, even up to 240 degrees for a heavily loaded truck traveling at highway speeds for a long period of time in hot weather. These values reported were based on people getting out of their vehicles and aiming a temperature gun at their differentials.
Anything above about 125 or 130 is going to be too hot for the human hand to touch for more than a few seconds. Based on your comments, I suspect your differential is probably in that range, or perhaps slightly hotter, but nowhere near as hot as the numbers I found in my search. I think you are ok. I'm pretty sure I even found some temperature info in Phil's Archives, here on this site, and I think the numbers were similar.
