What's the story on ACME thread bolts?

The floor-plate in the 3/4 Ton WC is held down partially by ACME threaded bolts. I've never seen anything like these. I can't find any information about them. Where they came from? Why they were made in the first place? Why would they be a good choice to use?

It seems that Land Rover used them to hold on their "wings" and Triumph used them somewhere. Other than that I see nothing about these odd bolts.

Anyone know anything about them? I'm really wondering about their origin.
