A good exterior grade stain should help in blocking UV rays, which a clear finish will not do.
Spar varnish is a beautiful product that gives pleasant results, but it's like having a super-needy glamour queen wife. Plan on having to, at minimum, lightly sand and re-coat at least once a year, or, if you wait longer, it will start to break down and will need more vigorous preparation.
There are also products such as Varathane, that seem to be a little more lasting and lower maintenance.
There is also the compatibility question with the stain you use. Be sure the topcoat material will not attack or react to the stain.
