Dave,
I had the same deal with my patina Power Wagon. I took it to a local shop and we experimented with various sheens of clear coat. We found a fairly dull but not flat one and the did a light sanding and shot it. It came out fabulous and was quite affordable. I no longer have a way to post pictures or I would show you.
