Mandrake is a great distro - I prefer SuSE (7.3).
It important to have enough memory - 128 Mbyte is about the min to get good performance. I have run it on a 16 Mbytes machine (slowwwwly). A pentium 60Mhz 32Mbyte mem, 6 Gb disks (scsi1) was ok but not snappy.
I use a PII 233 MHz w/256 Mb ram - it is a good machine for most work.
Using the correct video driver with a good video card - ati agp 128/2000 w/32MB is a good card.
The speed on my machines is about the same as windows but Linux will run stable in less memory. You do need a swap disk partition @ 2x ram if you do not have enough ram
