Look into the 251 L-head 6 used in 61'-71' WM300s. Outfitted with the same type performance equipment as the 230, it will put out enough hp and torque to make a noticable difference.Get someone to let you drive theirs to see, everything will be a boltup.
If your looking for something a little more modern, look into the old (AMC)in-line 6 258, used in cars and jeeps and which is now a Chrysler engine. All you need is someone to make an adapter for the original L-head bellhousing. I believe the later fuel injected version was rated at 175-190hp.This way you get to keep your powerplant MOPAR!
The perfect size in-line 6 diesel would be a Chrysler/Nissan diesel I found in a 70's IH scout mated to a 727 torqueflite auto tranny.
But alas, after checking it out on various websites, I found that top hp was only 109hp+- even with the turbo version. The guy said it pulled big tires good if you got the revs up a little meaning it was a dog at low rpms idle. I did notice the specs said its max. hp was rated at 3600rpms. Sure was pretty though, right size and most likely a good weight for the PWs.
As you noticed, everything I mentioned was somehow related to chrysler, but I've always been a MOPAR brand loyal kinda guy, no halfbreed mongrels in my stable.
