Any negative effects on the engine?

I had a 58 Austin Healy that could produce a awesome backfire like that. Drove it for years like that. The hard part was timing the rev up and let off sequence so that you were next to the girls when it would backfire on the street. Are there any negative effects on the engine from doing this other than the obvious stressing the muffler?
