When was 8.75 rear axle factory installed on 61-71 W100s ins

Looking at 61-71 W100’s for sale, both long and short box, the Dana 60 rear axle seems prevalent until the late 1960’s, and then the 8.75 axle seems to be more common after that. Was the smaller axle phased in at that point, or was the choice more about which option was chosen, regardless of year?
