How many people use the pull throttle?

I'm looking at my pull throttle in my Carryall and realize that I never use it. I don't use the on in my M37 either. Why did so many old cars have these? Was there some use for them that you don't see anymore?

Also because, I'm thinking I could reuse that panel & cable location for a push/pull heater valve control cable.
