One of the big drivers (no pun intended) is age. Kids who dreamed of having X car finally have the income to look into buying them, or the guys who owned one back in the day finally have the extra income to go pick up a really nice example as a toy to relive those days.
Muscle cars are hugely popular while hotrods not as much today, because hotrods were from the generation before baby boomers while the crazy muscle car prices are partly driven by baby boomers who want to have that car of their youth and have the disposable income to go get it.
Investors and peoples desires to get rich from everything old also play a part, but some of the "up and coming" classic cars are partly because the prices are more reasonable, but also because they were the cars my generation dreamed of having when we were kids, and now we're starting to have the cash to do crazy things like spend thousands of dollars building custom Power Wagons.
