4wd lockout hub question

i have dynatrac hubs in a 2010 3500 4wd. Hubs in open, non locked position. if i engage 4wd when rolling, should there be any engagement noise, spooling etc? i would think that the the driveline should engage at the trans case and spin the shafts in the non engaged hubs. what say you guys??
