When he was a young upstart his first plumbing job was in England. The boss told him to drill a hole through the foundation of a very old house using a star drill ("single-jacking" with a hand steel and a drilling hammer as we say in the mining camp). To hear him tell it, it was 3 feet of solid rock. This is why we now have roto-hammers.
I think the thing about those old houses back east, built of white oak or chestnut, is that after 200-300 years, only the best-built ones are still standing, and they are really amazing. Some of those old timber-framed barns are real works of art, all cut with a hand saw and chisels and joined with mortises and pegs of various sorts.
