PTO gear wont mesh with transmission

So I took the PTO off a 51' B-3-PW "up-to" NP420 and tried putting it on a 56' NP 420 "after" transmission. Well, the gears won't mesh because the PTO gear is horizontal whereas the transmission gear, that it mates with, is at an approximately 30-degree angle. *please excuse my ignorance as to the proper names of the gears. I don't have the service manual with me* After my "great discovery", I went out to the 51' and saw the gear in that transmission is horizontal.

Question is, do I rebuild the PTO with the proper gear or does someone have a good PTO, that will work with my transmission, that they want to sell or trade for?

Also, I noticed some 56's came with the synchromesh transmission. How do I i.d. mine to verify it is/is not synchromesh- besides its placement in relation to the firewall? I don't have a cab on the truck.
