I have heard of it done for flotation in the worst of conditions -- logging in the mud and such -- with the tires aired down to 15-20 lbs. It would be crazy on bare ground or pavement.
On the other hand I did once know of civilian powerwagon up in the hills here where he'd put the right front wheel (only) on backwards. It had an a-frame in the back and all I could figure was he was pulling from the side, maybe skidding logs up a hill or something and needed the extra wheelbase to keep from tipping over. Gas tank was strapped to the top of the cab, gravity-feed. It was that kind of truck.
