Hitch rating is the max trailer weight that can be attached to the hitch. Tongue weight is the amount of the trailer weight that is actually transferred to and carried by the hitch. Normally you should have 10 to 15 percent of the trailers weight on the tongue. So a 7500 lb trailer should have a minimum of 750 lbs on the tongue. Any less than 10% and your trailer could start wagging its tail very badly and cause you to loose control. There should be a rating for both max gross trailer weight and max tongue weight on your hitch.
