i installed a new fuel pump when i got my 91 cummins. the main problem with my system was the crappy fuel and return lines from the tank. there were rubber stub lines connecting the steel lines to the engine and fuel tank. 4 short lengths of hose, 8 couplers. my truck would lose prime after sitting. i went with 2 lengths of new high quality fuel hose. eliminated the leaks and likely would have outlasted a replacement set of steel lines and rubber hose. worked perfect after that. There is the stock fuel pump and then another, better fuel pump that is modified to work mechanically off the engine. it has a pushrod or similar to make it work with this engine.
