i checked the timing afterwork today, the reference plate is pretty bad to read but it seems that 0 (zero) i a hole. and with (or with the vaccum advance hooked up, it's about 3/8 in below 0, i'm guessing 4 or 5 degrees advance. i can no reference what it should be) and it also advance when reving the engine, with or without vaccum) also the mark is pretty steady, no real jumping around.
there is also a very eratic and far between miss that shows on all cylinders (used timing light) i'm wondering if myabe i don't have some higher rpm missing that i can't hear.
fyi, old plugs had alot of carbon, and it does seem to run rich.
