On my 76 Dodge pulling truck, I had 3 shafts made professionally. They only measurement they wanted was from centerline to centerline of each u-joint. After installing them about an 1 1/2" of the slip yoke is pulled out. However the truck has a solid rear suspension and little suspension in the front. 2" is probably good, I'd say a third to half of the slip yoke is in the range, it all depends upon suspension travel. Rockcrawlers usually use some custom shafts that won't pull apart when at full articulation.
