Safety:
1) Check the winch cable and cable clamps to make sure that they are in top condition.
2) Lay a blanket or heavey jacket on the winch cable when pulling to help slow down the cable whip if it should brake.
3) Keep the kids, wife, dogs, cats and everyting else out of the way.
Dig around and cut the main support roots before you start pulling. When you get the stump out, then pull the roots out 1 by 1. If the trees are not yet cut, cut them at 2' or more from the ground. Attach your cable near the top (be sure to cut a grove in the tree to stop the cable from coming off). This will give you much more leverage (twist) in pulling/ rotating the stump out of the ground. You will get twice the pull if you attach a snatch block to the tree then run the cable from the winch through this block then either back to the truck or to another stationary object. Do not connect the cable back to the tow hooks on the front of your truck, if you pull very hard you will bend the frame where they attach very easily
When pulling use just the winch. If you put the transmission in reverse plus pull with the winch this puts a lot of stress on the front axle componets and axles will make a very loud sound as they explode into pieces. Best thing to do is to anchor the truck, so it will not move, at the pintle hook in the rear. It is a lot less strain on the drive line to do it this way.
